If you're on Windows I highly recomend UltraEdit32 - one of the few with smarty tag syntax highlighting, plus (like many others) it will make backups every time you save, that's saved my bacon many times...

If you're doing php and javascript as well, or just want something bigger and better then go for Eclipse, the smarty syntax highlighting is a problem (but the Aptana version is promising to add it in shortly), but the "replace with previous from local history" is what all backups should be like, its amazing - it does a file diff as you restore so you can see exactly which bits you changed.

Add to that the built in ftp client and you'll never go back.
