ok, I had just removed dingats gifs and of course that just created more problems!

Now, I commented out the dingbats from the menu.tpl and that solved the problem-- however, I see the recommendation to "remove"-- is this necessary rather than to just "comment out"?

(thanks for this thread-- I also hated those dingy bats!)
