Not sure if this is the best way to do it but it works just fine using Fashion Mosiac.
If you▓re just wishing to put some text on the home page it▓s simple.
Go to customer/main.tpl scroll about half way down the page and find the following; -
if $main eq "catalog" and $current_category.category eq ""}
{/if}
Below this line place your H1 tag and text and it will appear directly below the large image and category links ▒box▓ near the top of the page. You will then have your featured products below your text if you have it enabled. You can see how it will look by going to my site,
