In my opinion, if you are going to use xcart, you should either use it, or lose it.
You can use static pages that can do anything you want -- but I would never leave the cart once your customer is with you.
This doesn't mean that you must always display your menus or header -- it simply means that the cart is in control, not your "external site".
Read up on static pages (static embedded) and learn how to integrate just about anything you want into xcart.
You will probably get friendly with the {literal} tag in smarty.

You simply have to get your head around how to do this (and accept the way things work). You WILL be able to do this... just accept the methodology.
