There is a thread at
http://forum.x-cart.com/showthread.php?t=18788 that does what you are asking. There is a problem in that it does not sort by date by default in version 4.1.x.
The mod discussed in this thread works with 4.0.x and works fine when setup correctly (we are using it in 4.0.19 without problems), however because of the database differences between 4.0.x and 4.1.x it does not work with 4.1.x.
To answer your question about storing your data in the database, other than photos all data is stored in the database. If you have many products the speed of your x-cart will suffer if you store photos in the database.
