Did you find the cause to this as I am having a similar problem.

The thumbnails will show ok in the product listings but when you go the details page, some will not show. I have also tried deleting and relinking images, cloning working products etc, but it doesn't solve it.

I have asked several times for help through this forum but no-one could help. I've asked through the helpdesk and they cannot reproduce the problem even if I point them to products that are not working on my system. However, I am using IE7 and they are using IE6 - so next week they are going to try it on IE7 to see if that is the problem.
