By nature a "pop up" is a new page. X-cart by default shows all the detail photos in the same pop up window if "Display detailed images in a popup window:" is checked in "Detailed Product Images options".
I couldn't get this particular mod to work at all for version 4.1.6 as the skin1\modules\Detailed_Product_Images\popup_image. tpl appears to be totally different.
I had much better luck with the mod in
http://forum.x-cart.com/showthread.php?t=22308 which also uses the Cerdmann imager. I found that I had to play with the settings in "Detailed Product Images options" until I got what wanted depending on what I wanted displayed.
