I had the identical GC error in 4.1.5 - so I wouldn't blame 4.1.6 for my issue. I am in no hurry to get GC working, but it would be nice to offer, as it's free.
The 4.1.6 upgrade was EXTREMELY easy... I only had to manually patch 3 files (and the 4th, I won't let x-cart near -- my credit card gateway file!). Let's put it another way: If you got to 4.1.5, 4.1.6 should be a piece of cake. Come back in 20 minutes and tell me how easy it was for you.
