TelaFirma has a mod that does this (auto sizes images on import or creation) for all of your images on import. It automates all image sizing to your specs and caches the images. I suspect he might have a 4.1.x version in the works and will should be announced in his thread in third-party mods forum once it is complete.
Although his mod is based on some open source, it is very clean and works beautifully for not only auto sizing, but also improves product images overall look and sharpness. Well worth the cost!
It makes sense to just plunk down every image you have in high resolutions and let the server create the sizes. So much better than manual or batch sizing in PS or PSP...
