This should only happen the first time that you click on the thumb. The initial time that it takes the image to appear is due to a few factors. First, it is reducing the size of the image, then it is applying the unsharp mask. These two things combined with the current server load (assuming you are on a shared server) account for the load time initially.
However, once the image is created, it is stored in the cache directory and it should display almost immediately the second time that it is requested.
