Default Non-Random Recommended Items List

This is another important modification that I can't find anything in the forum about (I do wish people would try to give more precise titles to their posts).

I want to have a list of recommended items show that relate to the specific item being viewed in the detail page. In practice, I have a client that sells auto related items and the category and database fields could be used to display a targeted list of appropriate "recommended" items. There are simply too many items to manually set upselling.

For example, if a user is viewing an item from U.S. Auto : Ford and the date field for the item is 1950, I would like to have a list of other items that match U.S. Auto : Ford : 1950. And, ideally sort the list by a specific field such as the type of item (which is also in the database). What shows from that set of data could be the first 10-20 items randomly displayed.

This is a fairly busy site so the main concern would be a drain on the database (which would already be working hard due to the large number of items alone) but maybe there would be a clever way of adding a field that contains some numerical code to make the selection of items more efficient. All of the data starts out locally in a Filemaker database which can be used to pre-process information. It might be possible to predetermine the recommended items in some way and only show items that match a special code shared by the item being displayed (just a thought).

I am certainly open to a developer working on this customization but would be grateful if anyone can point me in the right direction if this has already been worked on.

Thanks
John
