Thumbnail link to a larger image
 

Does anyone know how I would go about making the thumbnails on the detailed product page link to a larger thumbnail?

Also, is there a way to make it so i can upload this larger thumbnail and have it uploaded to the database, the same way that I do for the small thumbnail, through the administration panel?

well i think im just a tool, and didn't realize you just upload the large one and it will automatically generate a thumbnail :)

As far as I know it doesn't automatically make the thumbnail, just resizes it. This means the file size is exactly the same and your products listing page will be quite large.
