adding a second menu
 

We want to have a horizontal menu along the top ... but not just the home/cart/contact us

we want these to be a drop down to SOME categories and some static pages

then the left nav will be more fly-out menus

Is this possible at XC4.6 as it is - or do I need a mod.

Something like X-Cart Ultimenu - seems over kill

It is possible. You can use the Flyout Menu built-in to XC but with some css changes to fir the horizontal layout, you can use some 3rd party mods - xMenus, Phil's menus, you can also use menus built as standalone and integrate them within XC

The problem is I need a drop down of static pages along the top header menu (speed bar) ... this is not for categories or anything like that.
It's not clear that any of these do this.
