responsive template design for 4.5.5 Gold

Hi,

I need to integrate a specific look/feel into an adaptive/responsive template for Gold 4.5.5.
Would it be a good idea to start from installing and modifying one of those commercial responsive templates (eg Reboot template or other) ?
I was thinking that in this way, I wouldn't have to bother with implementing responsive layout from scratch in every representative page.

Appreciate any tips.

Hi Vasilis, Reboot would certainly give you a head start. It's a great template framework to start with and is based on many months (years?) of research into responsive design.

Much, if not all of the groundwork is done for you.

I'm launching reBOOT v2.0 for X-Cart v4.6.x in November, which is based on the new Bootstrap 3 framework :D/ , includes a plethora of responsive menus and new options. A lot of work is going into this release.

If you have ordered one of our templates in the past, I can give you a discount :)

Phil

Hi PhilJ,
Thanks for the reply.
Some more questions that have come out:

- Could I install Reboot on my local WAMP test server and customize it's look from there, before uploading it to the production site? I ask this, because I have the impression that it is domain-locked.

- Does Reboot template also have responsive admin ?

- How about customizations regarding the look and layout? Do you follow similar procedures, as with other templates? (eg copying any template files for modification to separate custom template directory inside /skin, etc)

Sure, the template works fine on localhost or 127.0.0.1

No, but BCSE has recently released a mobile admin app. You might want to check that out.

You can change the column layout on a per page/section basis in the template settings.
You can adjust the basic colour scheme by using the colour pickers in the template settings.
There are 3 header styles, 7 footer styles and you can choose the content of each footer column.
There are 2 product layout styles, various menu options etc etc in the template settings.
Plenty of other tweaks can be made easily.

More FAQs and info is available at www.xcartmods.co.uk/reboot

I'd suggest waiting for reBOOT v2.0 though.

Regarding any further tweaks in styles and/or template code, apart from the tweaks that can be done through the template settings, is it pretty much a similar workflow as with the other common templates? (as long as the same size units are kept in styles, so responsive functionality is not broken).

Yes, template names are kept the same as in skin/common_files

But there are additional templates also, for custom styling / features etc.

Are there any template-specific customization guidelines to take into account for making sure that any customizations implemented will be compatible with the responsive functionality of the template? I am talking about smarty and style tweaks in the code.

Also, for creating a custom theme based on Reboot, do we work with the template files located in '/skin/reboot/custom' directory?
