Show products by newest first 4.5.4

I am wondering how to show by the newest product id first in the categories and manufacturer pages. At the moment it doesnt make sense listing from the oldest first.

Please advise

I have tried in products.php to change the sort_direction to 1, however it doesnt appear to do anything.
