Why do we have to contact x-cart to remove the powered by x-cart?

Between the constant barrage of upselling from x-cart, I see that in 4.5.5, we have to contact x-cart before removing the Powered by X-Cart line at the bottom-left. Why?

If you installed trail version, yes. you need to. Own license, you don't need.
