Show subcategories only in the page of the category

Hello,

I have two questions, I hope someone can helpme. I need

1.- Show all my categories in the main menu, (I mean, the horizontal menu at the top of the page).

2.- Show the subcategiries in the left column once you make click in the category page, so as the title of my post says, I need to show the subcategories only in the page of its caregory.

I only need some advices regarding what template I have to edit to achieve this, and if you can helpme with some code I will highly apreciate your help.

categories on the left are shown by skin1/customer/main/categories.tpl. There is a tick box in admin General Settings/Appearance to display subcats when ina cat.
