Too many products in root categories and too many sub categories

I have a sneaking suspicion this topic may have been discussed in another post.

However I cannot located it quickly, been searching over and over this forum using different search queries to try and find it, anyways that explains why I am listing this as a topic, onto the problem.

We have 5 or 6 root categories:

Brother

Lexmark

Epson etc

These are printer cartridge manufacturers of course, what I ideally want to get out of X Cart v4.1.11, is so when a user selects a category stated above.

Is a drop down menu select box (I have previously developed in X Cart using this forum and other sources to get what I want) and thats it no other models there at all and no products in view at all.

So basically all a user would see when they click on the vertical menu, say they select brother.

Instead of seeing a humongous list of printer model no's (whicb we have over 100 definately of them, thats making the page huge to load), is to just show the drop down menu.

And no products until they select the printer model no from the drop down box.

Is this has to be possible somehow I should imagine, but how is this achievable, any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jeremy.

I'm trying to follow this but having a problem. From what I can understand you want your subcategories to be a drop down menu (a scrolling box might be better, but its not much if any different) that has a certain manufacturer's model numbers in it, correct?

Once the customer chooses a model number do you want them sent to a product, or to a subcategory that has all items pertaining to that model number? If it is a product page only that is pretty straight forward. If it is a page of products, it gets a little hairy.

I think what he is looking for is this...

I am trying to get the guy who created it to create the mod for anyone. I am sure he is available for custome work. Drop me a PM if interested and I will put you in contact with him.

Re: Too many products in root categories and too many sub categories

Thats exactly what I am looking for, we have a solution at the moment which is kind of like that sorry I think I have confused the previous persons post haha.

I mean we asin I have copied the vertical menu box for categories, amended it, to make it appear within a drop down selection box.

I have included that on the sub categories view so all you see at the root and the following root categories is the products and still being able to select other categories from the drop down.

Its basically more or less the same thing, just removed the sub categories like that long list that appears I removed that you see.

But would be good to see a mod for it.

Thanks,
Jeremy
