Product Option "default"... can it be done?

I did some searching for this and was unable to find any related threads, so here we go:

Most of the products I have in my online clothing store have options like sizes and colors.

Recently we've been having customers forget to select certain options before checking out. Unfortunately this requires a phone call/email to the customer to clarify their order. Not only does this slow down our fulfillment process, but it is inconvenient as well. We have found that many times they did indeed forget to select the option they wanted.

What I would like X-Cart to do is load product pages with the product options set to "Choose your size" or "Choose your color" instead of the product option with the lowest position number. If the customer forgets to select an option, a warning would appear indicating that they had not selected a required option.

I have considered doing this manually by creating a product option titled "Choose a size" with an associated exception, but with the number of products we have in the system it makes it extremely impractical to go into every single product and manually create product options and exceptions to simulate this effect.

Any ideas? TIA
