editing templates

Do I need to be familiar with PHP in order to adjust the cart to my needs?
I've installed the smarty plug-in for the dreamweaver (thank you balinor) but I don't see the design in the designer window and it seems too much to change everything manually in the code. for example - my header and logo have different proportions. Attached is how I see it in DW, in case This is not how it should be I thought I can change the look and feel myself without a programmer, was I wrong? thanks for the help Barak |
Re: editing templates
Moving to the 4.2 template editing forum. First, read this:
http://forum.x-cart.com/showthread.php?t=21529 Then, use this for the 4.2 specific templates: http://forum.x-cart.com/showthread.php?t=46920 Afraid it isn't as easy as simply using Dreamweaver :( |
Re: editing templates
Thanks for answering.
I've read the posts that you've referred me. If everything is done in the X-Cart admin area, why do I need the plug-in? Can changes be made with DW? If so, did the print screen I put on the original message is what I should see? |
Re: editing templates
I would advise not using DW - and I would also advise not editing in the admin area, but use an FTP client.

Re: editing templates
Hi Balinor,
I'm having the same issue - wanting to edit my pages outside of the admin area. You said to use an FTP client, i've done that and have all files on my local pc - how should i now proceed to edit/run my website pages? Have attempted to use dreamweaver without any success - have installed the smarty plugin which doesn't seem to help. |
Re: editing templates
I don't mean put the files on your local PC - you can do it that way if you want - but most good FTP clients have a built-in editor. Save a copy of the file you are editing, and make the changes right in your FTP client.

Re: editing templates
Balinor,
I haven't been able to give my site the attention it needs for the last 18mths due to family reasons and I'd like to put some effort into improving both its functionality and look. I guess one of my main questions is how easy or difficult is it to create a better look on my site. For example, I'd love to be able to blend the logo into the rest of the site, instead of it looking like a pic at the top of the screen. www.partyelements.com.au Is there a way I can do this through the xcart options or is the FTP client option a better one? If the FTP client is a better option is there a recommended one that works well with xcart, either at a cost or free? thanks |
Re: editing templates
In order to change the look of your site, you need to first have some graphic design ability - and then you need to be able to edit the templates to integrate those graphics, colors, etc. To do that, you edit the templates using an FTP client as mentioned above. I personally like CuteFTP Pro, but there are a number of them out there that work just as well - just a matter of personal preference. Be sure to get one that has a built-in editor though or you will waste a ton of time downloading, opening in an editor, saving, re-uploading, etc.
