Custom admin-side user flags?
 

Surprised that I couldn't find anything about this using search, but I'm sure someone out there must have done this in the past:

I am working on a customization for which I need to be able to add customer flags to certain accounts that can be viewed and changed from the admin side, but are not visible by the actual users. I figure that I could add an additional field in the user profile options and then make it invisible to customers using the Smarty templates, but it seems like there should be a better way to do this.

Any direction from someone who has implemented a similar thing or who has any ideas on the matter would be appreciated.

I mean something similar to the effect of adding an additional field to customer profiles, except that it must be viewable and editable by administrators only.

You can make custom fields that are not visible to the customer. We have a "vendor" fieled that lets us know where the product comes from. I don't know but expect its possible to do the same thing with the customer profiles.
