Not sure that is possible, as they use different code to call product items. You'd need to rewrite product.tpl to use the products.tpl code.

OK - so maybe I could achieve the same using another function.

I am looking to place thumbnails of the same category products in 2 or 3 columns down one side of the product display so it is easy to choose another to look at.

Maybe I could use "Bestsellers" or something?

Has anyone done anything similar?

Why not use the upselling links module? That's exactly what it does :)
