Catagories menu expanded layout

How can I get the catagories menu to display expanded in the catagory box?

example:

Catagory1
sub-cat1 (109)
sub-cat2 (200)
sub-cat3 (100)
Catagory2
Sub-cat (30)
etc

The numbers in the parenthesis show the number of produsts in that catagory
When you click on a sub-cat it displays the product in the content area.
The catagories stay permanently expanded and do not drop down or fly out.

I also want to remove any sub-catagories from showing in the center content area.
I know where to change it just cannot get it to do it :(

DO NOT use fancy categories. There are some nice mods in the Custom Mods forum, and some very good ones from xcartmods.co.uk as well.

Thank you for the replies. I have looked through the custom mods section and found that most of them, for the type of mod I am looking for, do not work with the version of X-Cart that I have. That is the main reason that I asked in the general forums so maybe someone would post a link to a paid solution or to a thread of an updated mod that does work for version 4.X. Yes there are alot of good custom mods there, for version 3.X. For version 4.X there are still good mods, but there are few.

Hello Padraic,

I wanted to achieve navigation something like this website http://www.onlinestoresinc.com/catalog/index.html so I have purchased the fancy categories.

Before I start building, since I stumbled across this thread and I very much value your opinion, can I ask why you are saying to NOT use FC?

Have looked at recommended xcartmods and they have some nice navigation mods but now I am a bit stumped. :) Nothing new there!

Here's a tree menu mod similar to the site you mention...
http://www.xcartmods.co.uk/x-cart-3-level-tree-category-menu-v4x-x-cart-mods-pr-4.html

Fancy cats tends to generate a lot of bloated table code, sometimes making up 70% of the whole page code, whereas the mod above is just unordered lists combined with CSS.

Balinor--

I read your post here and I'm searching X-Cart forums for the best way to have a flyout menu rollover (such as www.roomandboard.com). I'm in the process of taking apart what our fired consultant had thrown together, so with customizing I have noticed the instance of include fancy categories in our customer_categories.tpl. I haven't found "fancy categories" in our modules folder, so I don't believe that this is a module we have loaded. If I purchase a mod from the website you mentioned, do I need to remove the instance(s) that I found re: include fancy categories?

No, that is just an {if} statement for the module if it is installed - it ignores that code otherwise.

Thanks for the reply. Does http://www.xcartmods.co.uk have samples of what their tier menus look like? Besides having a nice flyout menu, I want to make sure any add on mod won't significantly increase the page load time.
