buttons... very confused read allot of post's....

So i've gone through and read every post i can find on buttons and many were helpful... but im still stuck and i know its something simple...

i just want my "add to cart" "add to wishlist" etc. buttons to have a different graphic
I have made a new button
choped it into three pieces
uploaded the files and the sides look great! my problem is that the middle wont change... what am i missing here? i can't find anything that is calling for the "butbg.gif" graphic
help!?

have you changed the class in your skin1.css file from the original
