Additional Manufacturer Category ?
 

I run a bookstore, I really like the manufacturers option so I can highlight publishers but I would also like customers to be able to shop by author

Whats the best way to do this? If I create categories I dont want them to display under categories, is there a way to duplicate the manufacturers option and just call it something else?

Is this possible? I want to buy an additional license for a bookstore I plan to launch and I wonder if the modification above is possible.

I havent found a solution, I may just try creating a category and hiding it
