Turn off {capture name=menu} breaks page?

goto categories.tpl

i try to disable {capture name=menu} and it breaks my entire page!

why is this??

where is this defined??

You need to comment out both the code you posted and the closing capture at the bottom.

What does the capture section actually do from a logic standpoint?
