Advanced Instant Product Search - consuming server performance?
I'm interested in the 'Advanced Instant Product Search' mod from FiretankSoftware but am afraid this'll slow down the server big time; is there any reason to believe this'll happen?
Any experiences? |

Unfortunately one of my customers found this to be the case and we had to remove it.

So this would mean a 'no go' with this type of mod? Quote:

Re: Advanced Instant Product Search - consuming server performance?
As I guess you are now asking me, I would say that one experience is not enough to justify me branding a product a no-go! Maybe some other experiences will surface in here to give you more of a cross section, but I would concurr with your original thoughts - definately. However, if your server can be tweaked and your shop doesn't have too many slower elements, it might well work for you. Why don't you talk to Firetank themsevles about your concerns?

Re: Advanced Instant Product Search - consuming server performance?
I could imagine this mod will cause a lot of database activity and other unforseen things (?)
Good idea to ask Firetank, I will do that. If there's anybody else outthere which has experiences with this mod, please share your experiences. |
Re: Advanced Instant Product Search - consuming server performance?
The advanced instant product search needs to request data with every key press. It only consumes resources when it's being used.
The speed of it is purely down to the server you are on and the resources available to your site. You have to take into consideration what it's doing, as a person is tying it's literally searching in realtime on the site for all the products which match what the customer is doing. On your normal x-cart sites (say 30 customers or less online at any one time) it generally works no problems at all unless you don't have the resources for it. If you have a site which gets 30 or more conncurrent (on at the same time) users I wouldn't recommend it unless you are on a dedicated server. |

Might depend too on the size of your original images, I'm assuming it grabs your thumnails and resizes them? I've been thinking of getting the standard search myself thinking it would be taking up too much resources, my thumbs are pretty big to start with (and woudn't even show well that small -to detailed).

Re: Advanced Instant Product Search - consuming server performance?
Same here, I also got my doubts about images not only from a speed point of view but also because I somehow feel it has got nothing to do with a 'normal' search anymore; well that's just me probably ...
I'm also looking a the standard one; there's the commercial Instant Product Search basic one and the freebie Dynamic Search mod where we can choose from. Now we just need to figure out what are the differences i.e. what is best ... any ideas? |
