is the above possible? If so, could someone explain how?

Open head.tpl. Remove this: { include file="customer/search.tpl" }

Open customer/home.tpl. Add this where you would like it to appear:

{ include file="customer/search.tpl" }

You can also edit search.tpl and format things your way...
