How to customize look in certain areas?
 

I am trying to edit certain sections of my site to have a little bit of a custom look.

I then realized I have no idea where to begin. What I would like to do is change the grey areas in this menu

to have an image background, and also change the font color once I've added the background. Can anyone point me as to where to start?

i found the help.tpl in /skin1/ and tried the obvious addition of a < body background= > tag, but it gave the entire website that background.

yeah i've been reading that thread and playing around all morning, i kinda half ass get it, but it all hasn't quite clicked.

I got the background changed, but havent quite figured out how to change just those font colors for links. I need to change them to white cause the background is very dark
