Easy add/remove Left or Right custom Blocks on pages?

I was wondering if there is a way to easily add or remove custom blocks on the left or right side of the webpage? I come from a backgroud of using Phpnuke and it's varients, and one of the things you can do pretty easily is create "blocks" which appear on the right or left side (like the categories list, bestsellers, log in, etc. that exist in X-cart) and be able to juggle their positioning without hardcoding everything. My sites usually needs to add random news posts or other info in different areas on the left and right sides, and they stay for different lengths of time (such as contest mentions, or special pricing on items, etc). Is there a way to easily create these side menu items in X-cart?
In Phpnuke you just add a block file to the blocks folder and it will be available to select. I was hoping "modules" was the term in X-cart, but it doesn't really look like it.

I know php and html, so I could always just hardcode a new .tpl and just go in everytime and add it hard-coded, but that's a slight bummer. If this doesn't exist could I suggest that it be a future development?

its all handled in customer/home.tpl

you will have to code things but you can set up if / then rules using smarty to control things

Had a feeling...

Yeah, I had a feeling it was that way. It's not too big a deal, but it would be a really great addition to X-cart if that could be done through the backend interface like Phpnuke. Allow users to create custom blocks or such and have them set like the categoried so the order and stuff could be altered.

Oh well, off to coding I go.....

Wow, I'm so new so XC, I didn't realize this wasn't built in. Figured I just didn't find it yet.

How much $ to test your control block mod, groovy?
