Manufacturer and sub manufacturer

How can I create sub-manufacturer?

For example - a lot of people use this manufacturer and brand. Many brand also has another series of name (product lineup) under their brand.

Dell
-inspiron
-latitude
-precision

Sony
-T
-S
-F
-FX

Honda
-Civic
-Del Sol
-Prelude

So, the product can be assigned to

Category: Electronic & electrnoic > computer & electrnoic > computer > laptop

Manufactuer: Dell & Dell > Latitude.

Probably easier just to use another main cateogory for MFR....

I am looking for sub manufacturer as well. Is Balinor's suggestion of establishing a Manufacturer category/sub categories still a valid best practice?

Does 4.3 offer any flexibility in manufacturers? Any relevant mods out there?

Does anybody know a better solution? I see a lot of e-stores with such functionality, but obviously they based on something else but x-cart.

Re: Manufacturer and sub manufacturer

Personally I've never seen anything out there that would do what you are talking about. In fact I've never seen sub manufacturers in the world even. In the example given:

Dell
-Inspiron
-Latitude
-Precision

Technically those aren't sub manufacturers. Dell is the manufacturer, Inspiron and all those following are the Model. So you only have one Manufacturer. The only way you'd have a sub manufacturer is lets say something like:

Ford
-Lincoln

Since the Lincoln vehicles are technically made by Ford you might consider that a sub manufacturer, but that'd just be weird.

And I think it's because of this that X-Cart doesn't use sub manufacturers nor are there any mods. You might be able to create something like this with some indepth customization, but not sure it's worth the labor.

Re: Manufacturer and sub manufacturer

Making manufacturers unlimited would involve a lot of changes, I would highly recommend using categories. Perhaps you could add a 'Manufacturers' category and then have manufacturers and sub-manufacturer categories.
