Shopping cart functionality without storefront

I recently installed X-Cart and am trying to figure out how the low level functions of the store work. What I want to do is use the shopping cart and store features without having to use the storefront. Instead I want to use static html pages on my website that list the product information and have links that say "add to cart". Specifically what I need to know is how to send variables to the php functions for such things as adding products to cart, viewing the shopping cart, checking out, etc. This information doesn't seem to be documented in the admin manual, as this assumes you are using the storefront functionality. Has anyone used the store in this manner without the storefront, and if so where can I start to find this information?
