Changing buttons
 

I'm tring to change the default delete item, update and clear cart buttons found on the customer cart page to form buttons but can't figure out how to do it the right way. Has anyone done this successfully and if you have can you give me some tips?

The button is in the file: skin1/buttons/button.tpl. The button has 3 parts, left, middle and right. They are 3 pictures for these 3 parts and they are in skin1/images. The 3 image files are: but1.gif, butbg.gif and but2.gif

I can change the picture easy enough and have done so in creating new templates for add to cart, wishlist and checkout buttons, but I don't want to use a picture for these other 3 buttons, I want to make the buttons actual form buttons instead if using images. I'm sure there is a simple way to do it, but I can't seem to get it right.
