Crisp White - adding a video (or other segment) to the home page
 

Hi there

I am playing with XC5 and using Crisp White Skin, and I want to add a segment (predominantly for a youtube video) onto my home page between the category list and the featured products list.

I'll be honest, I can just about manage to fiddle with XC4 and add a few template files here and there, but with XC5 I don't have a scooby what to do.

I have installed the webmaster and custom skin modules, and I have managed to do a few basic things (like hiding weight and SKU), but beyond that, I'm struggling with the structure and how it all works. Pretty much all of it, actually.

If you have done this, or know how to do it (or something similar), could you share an 'Idiot's Guide'? I would probably need some fairly basic instructions, if basic instructions are enough for this platform.

Any pointers gratefully received.

Hi there.
The easiest way is to switch positions of the welcome block and featured products block on the front page using the layout editor tool, and then customize the welcome block the way you want (add videos, text, whatever).

Hi Alex

Thanks for your suggestion. I did consider doing that, but I would prefer to leave that block where it is and create a new block further down.

Part of doing this is to help me understand how XC5 builds the pages. I will never be an expert in this, and there will be plenty that I can't do myself, but I would like to be more comfortable with the platform.

Basically, you need to create your own template and register it in the ''center" view list with the weight that suits you.

I did actually manage to do this already, but haven't had a chance to update this post with the method I used.

Essentially, I copied the sample module from the developer doc regarding 'Controllers', stripped out the standard output and put in the iframe code instead. It works a treat, and I now have a YouTube video front and centre on my home page.

I don't know exactly how it works, but I have a rough idea. Thankfully the sample code did most of the heavy thinking. I just fiddled with it until it did what I wanted.
