Is there a way to limit how many times a user can purchase a product?

I offer free products and product trials to promote registration, but as you know, customers will download the same FREE product 4-5 times. I want to limit that.

What would be the way to do this?

It's not possible without customization. We implemented this solution for a client via a custom module, and it was quite involved in order to make it intuitive and completely user friendly.

Still they can come back and place another order, but we were able to prevent abuse on a single order.
