Provide quote for shipping
 

Hello,

I ship from outside of the US and Canada, so my shipping cost will vary depending on weight, dimension of final shipping box, etc. Because of this, I do not want to lock into a freight cost at checkout as I have to get a quote from the shipper which I will pass on to the customer later.

Is there a way to avoid adding shipping and just putting it as TBD?

As far as I am aware of, there is no such possibility. Currently I am writing a module which will allow a customer to request a quote before buying, and it will allow the store admin to provide a quote that only modifies the shipping cost. Hopefully it will be out within a couple of months.

There is no way to do this without custom coding. You can improvise but it will still require some customization.


Without any customization you can still do it but it may not be as obvious to customers.
Create new shipping method and call it TBD. Set its cost to $0. Add description for it "shipping cost to be added at later time..." or whatever you want to say.
Customers will still be able to checkout but you need to make sure they don't hold you for the $0 cost showing.
If you want to replace the $0 text you will need to modify the templates showing shipping cost and replace the output for cost with "TBD" text
