Re: X-Cart v4.1.10 released

I thought about having them do it as well. They were going to charge about $650 which isn't bad but they said that all the custom mods and code I'd have to take up with the developers. Some of the functionality that my cart has is very subtle and would be easy for anyone to miss who doesn't know the full history. So... I didn't want to pay $650 only to pay 3rd party dudes another $650 plus to get their mods to work and such...

Also, I just wanted to see if I could do it! :) And I did. Great sense of accomplishment and saved myself a decent chunk of change.

Now I know my cart like the back of my hand... Well... almost.

Did it all locally so no fear of screwing up my live site.

Also... for those reading that are not at all experienced with xcart and the code languages involved... I have a good bit of experience so I wasn't driving completely blind.

Anyhoo... Good times.

Cheers.

Hello All,

Here is a awesome tool to help with upgrade file changes and it's free too!

http://sourcegear.com/diffmerge/index.html

Spend the time to learn how to use it and you won't be sorry. I don't know if this is the best tool or not but it works great for me.

Stupid Question #7793831:

The upgrade instructions state:

Quote:

2. Uncompress this archive to the directory where your X-Cart has been installed.

What if you downloaded the file and decompressed it on your computer because you don't know how to do all that fancy SSH stuff (is it SSH?)? What if you have to FTP with an FTP client like.. CyberDuck? Do you just upload the files/folders into the X-Cart directory.. will it accomplish the same thing? I am assuming the new files nee to overwrite the old ones...

which brings me to Stupid Question #7793832:

Do I need to download any files or templates I have altered, upload the upgrade and then re-upload the altered files/templates to ensure my site will look the same and have the same features? Because it has taken me months to get everything remotely close to looking the way I want it too!!!

Thank you in advance!

You really should use the most appropriate tool for the job.

The command line will allow you to:
1. in one command, place everything where it needs to be;
2. ownership and permissions are all accounted for;
3. you can use the file.lst for changing permissions

Can you use FTP? It will take you significantly longer. You will risk overwriting files that you may not want to. You risk making a mess. IN MY OPINION, unless you really know your stuff, do not try to upgrade wit FTP. You are better off learning the 3 or 4 commands in the command line and then just do it. It will be time well spent.

There is the issue of access though. I had to specially request SSH access to my hosting.

Thanks for the advice.

So to recap.. Can I FTP the files? Do I need to download/save any files I made changes or modifications to and reupload them afterwards? Also, I would assume I would need to edit the newer of those files and paste in the changes I previously made.. as I would guess some of the files I modified have been updated with the new X-Cart version?

Re: X-Cart v4.1.10 released

The below assumes that you know what you're doing ;)

1. Can I FTP the files?: Yes

2. Do I need to download/save any files I made changes or modifications to and reupload them afterwards?: Yes. You should back up your whole site for that matter. You generally shouldn't just upload the old files. You need to compare the old against the new and add any new code that needs to be there.

3. Also, I would assume I would need to edit the newer of those files and paste in the changes I previously made.. as I would guess some of the files I modified have been updated with the new X-Cart version? - Aye... Addressed in Question 2.

You should really do this all locally on your computer first - setup your computer as a web server and get to work. When all works then you can move your local site to your live server.

The tools I use (Mac OsX)

Cyberduck
Text Wrangler - Text Editor and File Comparing
Terminal (For SSH)
24" Samsung Monitor ;)
Caffeine
Fickle Ego
Etc...

Best,

B

P.S. Carp is right. Get SSH access and google the commands you need to know when you need to know them (like how to change file permissions recursively and such). You'll be glad you did and you'll add a badge to your geek jacket. If your host won't give you ssh, look elsewhere.

Thanks!!!! Since I am a really a beginner when it comes to servers, MySQL, PHP... and I have several Technical Support points.. would they do the upgrade/install for me? I see they do installs but I didn't see anything about upgrades?
