Why is there no way to list product manufacturers and sort by manufacturers in x-cart 5? Can that be added?

Sort by manufacturers option was missing version 3.x to 4.x & it's not in 5 also :(
Actually other sorting options are also missing which is necessary now a days.
SORT BY BEST SELLING
SORT BY MOST VIEWED
SORT BY PRODUCT ID/SKU
SORT BY EXTRA FIELDS

Although you can't sort products by manufacturer and extra fields in X-Cart 5, you can filter products by these attributes. For example, if you add a global attribute named "Manufacturer", you can setup it so that the field will show up in the "Shopping options" sidebar block (see http://demostore.x-cart.com/igoods).
