X-Payment vs. X-Cart out of the box? What's the dif?

Hey folks. I'm coming out of an X-AOM upgrade and am trying to understand if / why I should use x-payments. Do I even need it? I'll be running 4.5.5. I see x-connector there. I'll have a gateway set up. X-Payments is not a must have, is it? X-Cart should be able to perform all this with my payment gateway service just fine, right?

What kind of payment gateway do you have - a "direct" taking payments on your shop, or a "form", where the customer leaves your site to pay on the gateway's site?

It was direct on 4.1.12 but out of compliance. I'd like to keep it that way for 4.5.5 but be within compliance. It *looks* like X-Payments is needed to do this and not to go to an external transaction page (which is terribly sneaky if I'm right in my initial observations on this. This actually drives the cost up for this thing well past more stable e-com solutions that exist out there).
