Cloning 3-columns skin
 

I'm trying to modify the 3-column skin. I'm copying the 3-columns directory as myskin. I look inside and there is only two files inside.

How does that work?! the other skins directories have css, customer, images etc. But this one only has two files.

How is it all connected to produce the 3 column full page width layout? Does it some how link with 2-column and common_files folder?

Hello

To make changes in 3-Columns directory.

1. Select 3-Col Template from Admin.
2. Edit files in Folder "Your Root/skin/common_files/customer/"

I am working on my new domain in 3-Column Template.

Thanks, but I would like to leave that folder alone so I can refer back to the original anytime. I like to create a complete new skin folder "myskin" and make any changes in there myself.

make anew folder call it whatever you want. Myskin or superhappyskinfolder5000

copy the files from common_skin preserving folder structure...

so mynewfolder/customer/home.tpl
mynewfolder/images/mynewimage.jpg etc....

make sure you have a css/altskin.css or some smarty variable won't work

Definitely the way to go. You don't need to copy all of the files but I would start with the ones listed here: altskin.ini, screenshot.png, and css/altskin.css. Then if you want to modify a tpl, copy it from common_files then edit.
