quantity variable - change drop down menu to text field

Anyone know how to do this? I need to change the drop down menu into a text field so people can input their own amount. This will work with products that my client chooses to sell per square foot. This will allow the visitor to purchase 1 or 1,000 square feet. It will look much better as a blank text field than a dropdown box that has 1,000 selections ~ it will also be more user friendly.

As always, thanks for your time and suggestions.

Look at this

Why don't you just make a text box for that product in the description.

Look at my giftbaskets with code entered into a product this way I can have it or not have it. It using the product options word so that it saves in the DB and you can see it under admin. If you want the code for that I will paste it in a reply.

Thanks for the reply but I don't think that will work in my situation. I'm using the text field so they can enter large numbers. One project may require 5000 sq ft. That would be too much to enter into the product options field.

I figured out how to do it. I also applied a quantity validation function on the product.tpl page as outlined in this post:

Now the only thing that I'm trying to do is validate the quantity on the products.tpl file when the buy it now function is enabled.
