The easiest way you can try is:
1) Create new menus via Simple CMS module. They will have names of your categories and will link to actual category pages.
2) Apply custom CSS rule that will hide categories section. I used this rule:
Code:

.block-top-categories {display: none;}

It is really easy and takes 5 minutes to apply. After that I got the following result:

Is it what you need?

And how to do the same thing properly, so that the navigation in the top built based upon category structure with whole tree of sub categories built?

Don't need exact what to-do, rather looking for road map.

Having two naviations on the page, one hidden, and other manually made is not the preferred solution.

It should have those categories in the top nav by default or at least an option for that with subcategories drop-down. I think x-cart is considering adding this

Yes, categories drop-down (like Flyout Menus in X-Cart 4) will be definitely added in several months.

Re: Left Categories Navigation

I just hired Mike White to make this module because I was very unhappy with how that "category tree" works.

The top menu should not be called Primary... when you read primary menu you feel like you are changing the main horizontal category tree...but that doesn't work. Instead that just duplicates everything from the side. Why would you want both?

So I am having him turn it into a menu to work just like the primary and footer menus do plus adding in flyouts.

I guess I wish I would have seen this first to know how close it was to being done before I hired Mike, but I have a feeling he will finish well before you guys actually add it.

Once the module is ready, share the snapshot of how it actually works. I would be also happy if Mike created a publicly available module (free or paid) out of this mod.

I do believe his intentions are to make the module available on the marketplace, yes.

Yes, this module will be a custom drop down menu to replace the Primary menu in SimpleCMS. I don't think it will compete with Flyout categories, this is for a custom built menu and can be used for anything. Tony I asked you a question in the webinar thread about this.
