Re: Should we make this forum public?

If QT would have a Community Edition for XC I see no reason to make this forum public.

Else, XC is still a paid software. All who paid for it have unrestricted access. What kind of discussions we will have here if making it public to all, any improvement? It will be the same, those who don't have a license will come only to ask general things about XC as usual.

The only positive step forward I see for the moment is getting a feedback from potential users/developers of XC, those who are using XC demo version.

All popular open source/free shopping carts have public forums because these solutions are free. Like XC there are other paid shopping carts which offer access to their forums only if you buy a license. Nothing wrong in QT policy making this forum public only for a few sections, those for general questions.

Anyway I have to appreciate one thing. It is an good approach from QT asking in public XC Community for this.

It is just a personal opinion ...

Completely agree with you. Makes no sense unless they've bought the product. (unless they're just seeing if x-cart has an active forum) but to be honest I would take a different approach and just make a trial for full access to the forum.

I can't see x-cart making a free version even though it would be great. If they did do it I can see HUGE benefits to everyone.

Look at it like this, the more people who use x-cart shopping cart even if it's free or the paid version x-cart would make more money. People need upgrades, customizations, hosting, modules, and so on. With more money xcart can keep improving it's shopping cart. As I said before more people means a bigger community which will give more ideas to improve x-cart. Third party websites will make more money which would hopefully encourange them to make better mods, more people will need hosting, the list really goes on and on. :)

Ha but I'm a 19 year old noob. Sorry for going way off topic here.

Keep it closed. There is no reason to make this forum public. If you want to have X-Payments public forum let it be just for general questions and news but not for issues, customizations or working solution

Re: Should we make this forum public?

Personally I would like to know more opinions about advantages and disadvantages. As I said I am looking only for advantages, some fresh meat here could help us in some ways. The only problem I see, XC is a paid software. Do you think anyone could help improving a software coming from a demo? At that stage I count they only testing not taking a final decision. There are a lot of good developers here who are already doing a great job for free or not. By the way, XC doesn't need promotion, it has already an age and fans. If QT will hear more advices from XC Community believe me there is no need to make this forum public.

Let's go a little in ancient times. Over time QT was blamed about being too harsh imposing rules like not mentioning other shopping cart names, complaining in this forum about their products. Personally I read all these stories. Some of them are true, some of them are not.

Keep in mind if you make this forum public be sure there is no undo command.

@Alex: please keep voting open for one more month. it seems we cannot let this result as it is.

Re: Should we make this forum public?

I don't understand the reasoning for a closed forum being related to paid vs. free/open-source software. Sure, the software was purchased - but the majority of the advise provided on this forum is from volunteers, who are not directly paid.

For me - the only reason to close anything on the forum is if the exchange of information could cause a security breech. But, I don't think a hacker needs this forum if they are determined to compromise the software.

I prefer an open forum for a few reasons:
1 - A public forum helps QT to be more responsive on the forum. If it can be seen by people who have not yet made a purchase - a well run, informative forum is good for their marketing purposes. The more successful QT is, the more likely the software can be improved more rapidly. (This is not a dig towards QT - I appreciate their improved attention to the forum recently.)
2 - A private forum makes a decision to purchase more difficult. For a single x-cart license, this may not be significant. But X-Payments cannot be considered low cost, and someone considering a purchase needs as much information as possible.
3 - A public forum offers more help to the developers on here. It gives their potential customers more insight into their services.

9 vs 9 (Public vs Private)

I think I should prolong this poll for a couple of weeks ahead.
