Issue with Smart Search Add On

We have our cart setup and coded to where it forces a customer to choose a size on products, however if the customer searches for the product through smart search it allows them to bypass the choose size, and goes straight to the cart. The only way I see to thwart this is to kill buy it now, but we want that active, can you suggest anything?
