Dimensions?
 

Is it just me or did the ability to add the dimension of a product really get removed?

We ship some items that are large and the dimensions matter, not just the weight.

Is this glaring omission going to be fixed?

In X-Cart 5 you can add dimensions for products that are large - just switch the "Ship in a separate box" setting to "Yes" to make the fields appear.

Or did you face the issue with X-Cart 4?

I did not try the ship in a separate box when looking at it but that makes sense as I did notice the fields are in the database.

X-Cart 4 did not require this box to be checked for the fields to show up so no I did not face this issue on X-Cart 4.

I guess I thought X-Cart also was doing some sort of calculation to know when it needed to split the order to more boxes based on weight OR dimensions, but given that it doesn't know the size of our boxes (although I think it used to know the smallest one in X-Cart 4) then it probably isn't doing this anyways.

I think this will probably be ok, but it would be great if it was enhanced to allow me to enter all of our box sizes and it knew when to split it and on the order sent to us it could show what boxes it used and the total weight it came up with.

Thanks for the idea.

The major problem with the logic that splits an order into parcels is that it is a resource hog. The more items a customer has in the cart, the more combinations the cart has to look through to find the one that works better. Having 1000 items in the cart may put your website down (don't think of ordinary customers, think of hackers trying to down your store). That's why we added the easier alternative.

If we find a way to get over the performance problem, we will surely add the auto-split logic.

By the way, you can vote for the idea at http://ideas.x-cart.com/. Although we don't use the number of votes as the priority when choosing features to implement, we do consider it when deciding such a priority.
