PayPal is launching an advanced payment interface.

Hi Everyone,

Folks from Paypal informed about a new change they are going to implement very soon. See https://www.paypal-marketing.com/emarketing/allnewcheckout/index.page

No changes in X-Cart's Paypal modules are required.

See their information below:

Quote:

What: *PayPal is launching an advanced payment interface. *The new interface updates checkout and is faster and easier for consumers. *

Why are we doing this: Consumers want a consistent, fast and easy online PayPal experience. *Our research confirms that the new checkout interface outperforms the old. *

Benefits to merchants: *It’s easy for merchants to integrate with minimal effort. Just add a logo, color, order details (optional) – and it’s free. In most cases the channel partners will need to do some additional work around line item details.
*

PayPal is committed to helping merchants grow their business
We’ve invested millions of dollars and years of usability research to bring merchants an all new checkout experience on Website Payments Standard for their customers.
We’ve listened to merchants and buyer feedback and we’re making these changes based on both testing and the valuable insights we’ve gleaned from the people who use PayPal.
We’re aiming to roll out the new interface to all of PayPal’s checkout products over time so that buyers will experience the same checkout process no matter which payment solution the merchant employs.
By the time the holiday shopping season begins all purchases made on Website Payments Standard will have the new interface, so that customers will have a consistent checkout experience.

The new interface is designed to create a more consistent checkout flow that feels faster and more natural
In testing, consumers preferred the new checkout interface over the current checkout experience.
In an economic climate that is being driven by consumer preference, now is the time to ensure that businesses are catering to their customers’ needs.
The new interface helps merchants meet customer demand by offering a smoother experience that makes checkout interface look more natural on the merchant’s site.

Integration is free and easy
While no additional work is needed we recommend merchants make a few minimal changes to create a seamless experience for their customers.
Merchants have received step-by-step instructions for customizing their PayPal checkout interface. While not mandatory, these simple steps will allow merchants to offer the best possible checkout experience to their customers. Merchants will be able to optimize their site by:
Providing their logo – which they can do directly with PayPal
Picking a background color– which they can do directly with PayPal
Configuring checkout to pass the buyers' order details to PayPal

Re: PayPal is launching an advanced payment interface.

Some FAQs for you:

Quote:

What is the new updated checkout experience?

The new interface is designed to create a more consistent checkout flow that feels faster and more natural. In testing, consumers preferred the new checkout interface over the current checkout experience. The new checkout offers seamless integration with the merchant’s site and provides a more natural purchasing interface for customers.

More specifically, the new checkout flow provides buyers with:

A sense of continuity from merchant sites with merchant branding appearing first
Streamlined flows and eliminated pages refresh via sliding interaction
Visible cart contents throughout flow so that buyers always have a clear view of their purchases

Why is PayPal changing the checkout experience?

PayPal is committed to helping merchants improve their business and we have invested millions of dollars and years of usability research to bring merchants an all new checkout that improves the overall checkout experience for their customers. Testing showed that consumers preferred the new checkout interface over the current checkout experience. The new interface helps merchants meet customer demand by offering a smoother experience that makes checkout interface look more natural on the merchant’s site.

Who will be affected by these changes?

We are starting with handful of merchants using Website Payments Standard. All WPS merchants will be able to use the new checkout by November 1.

How much do merchants need to pay in order to offer the new checkout interface?

Integration is free for all merchants.

When will the all-new PayPal checkout be live?

A small number of randomly selected buyers have been experiencing the new checkout since May. That number will steadily increase over the next few months.

What about other products?

We want all PayPal customers to eventually experience a uniform and consistent checkout across our platforms and will eventually roll out the new interface to all of our payments products.

How long will it take for merchants to optimize their checkout flow?

Uploading a logo and selecting a color will only take a few minutes. Passing order details requires an API code change which could take merchants, partners or their developers a bit longer.

Do merchants need to sign any additional contracts/agreements?

No additional contract/agreements are necessary.

What happens if a merchant doesn’t make these changes?

Even if merchants don't make these changes, buyers will still be able to complete their purchases using the new checkout flow.

Can merchants opt out of this?

No, by November 1 all WPS merchants will offer the new checkout experience to their customers.

Re: PayPal is launching an advanced payment interface.

Thank you for posting about this-- I have been hoping x-cart will integrate with this.

You said no changes to X-Cart's modules are necessary. However, it appears that now there is the option for all cart contents to be passed to paypal. So instead of it saying "Goods from X Store" in one chunk, it will list each item specifically and the shipping cost right in the Paypal checkout. It says that shopping cart companies can choose to implement this or not, so it seems like it is something that X-Cart will need to change in the code.

This is a vital feature-- will X-cart be implementing this?

Thanks!

We are making sure no changes are required for Express Checkout as this is going to be next one for similar change.

UPDATE: doing the same for WPS

I did a Website Payments Standard test order yesterday in the 4.4.1 cart I'm working on, and it showed the new checkout. But mine still said "Goods from X" and did not list the items, shipping, taxes, quantities or anything. It sounds like you guys are already checking this out. Thanks!

Hi Everyone,

Unfortunately, X-Cart doesn't pass the "line items" :(
We are figuring out what we can do in order to make it happen.

Thanks for looking into this-- I think it will be a great addition to Paypal checkout for sure!

So how long, when a customer checkout with Paypal express, not even the total is past to Paypal, the checkout page is empty. :(. I customer is not going to use Paypal working this way.

Is there any update on this?

Sorry for the delay, guys. We are going to have it done this month. Preparing 4.4.2 for release takes some time. I hope this change will be included in 4.4.2, too. We'll write something about that in the X-Cart Changelog.

Can't wait for you guys to release 4.4.2 with paypal line items in the end of December. Hopefully, no more delayed.

Re: PayPal is launching an advanced payment interface.

I have PayPal as my only checkout method, and I have tried to make it obvious on my site that you do not need a PayPal account check out (Skip below "Log in to my PayPal account" and you will see "Pay with a debit or credit card".), but I lose a lot of sales after they go to PayPal.

Is it possible to have it default to have the tab "Pay with debit or credit card" open instead of defaulting to having the "log in to my paypal account" tab open?

This says you guys have got this working with Express checkout.

Is this going to be implemented with Standard? I imagine many users using paypal as their only option are the ones that need line items the most.

I haven't tested yet to see if it is already done-- am waiting for the upgrade pack.

Thank you!

Re: PayPal is launching an advanced payment interface.

> Is this going to be implemented with Standard?

AFAIK Paypal implemented new checkout flow for Express Checkout only. I heard they are going to have it for their other payment methods some time later. Once they implement new checkout flow for their other payment methods we will consider changing our integrations for them, too! But first of all we should wait for details on implementation from Paypal reps.

I'm pretty sure this is not just for Express Checkout.

I use Paypal Standard. In my Paypal account I already setup the new design for the improved checkout flow. I can see it when I checkout through Payments Standard. I see everything new as it should be-- except line items. I hope you guys can look into this!

Here-- I have attached a screenshot showing my Paypal Standard checkout. It says at the top "welcome to the new Paypal checkout." However, line items have not been implemented.

Re: PayPal is launching an advanced payment interface.

Jadefrolics, thank you for the update. Looks like Paypal forgot to inform us about the change for their Standard method. Or we missed it somehow.

Anyway, I submitted request for line items support for Paypal Standard integration, too.
However, I am not sure when it will be done as we've just released 4.4.2 and the change may be included in v4.4.3 only (I don't have any ETA for 4.4.3 release).

Re: PayPal is launching an advanced payment interface.

Thanks, Alex.

I would definitely appreciate being able to show my customer more than a simple "your total cost, including shipping" as the only line-item in a paypal invoice.

however..

First, the new USPS standards must be implemented in xcart before the May deadline. Let's not have another catch-up scenario like we had with the Jan 2nd USPS changes, okay? PLEASE.

And, another PLEASE!.. do some due diligence testing with the paypal line-item coding. Glitches and snafus at that part of the purchasing process can cause more than just a confused customer, it can result in a non-customer. So, take your time in the implementation, but in a speedy fashion. :-)

Thanks!

Though this "offtopic" here I'll tell everyone that the USPS May update is scheduled to be included in v4.4.3 (should be released before May).

Just to remind - this topic is about new Paypal checkout flow :)

Ambal - this is pretty weak. In your second post in this thread, back from October - you quote an email from Paypal which says:

We've been waiting for this for a long long time ..... I would hope a patch can be provided much faster than waiting for 4.4.3!!!!

I've created a quick mod that will add line items, taxes, shippings on Paypal side.
The mod patch can be applied via X-Cart admin backend for X-Cart 4.4.2. (Updated)

For other versions it can be easily ported.

Hello , did not see a patch for 4.3.2 ? Do you have one for 4.3.2 ?

Thanks

OK. I've created the one for latest 4.3.x. (Updated)
Try the attached patch.

Re: PayPal is launching an advanced payment interface.

Nice one Alex :) I see in the patch code though it says all items are forced across as "Quantity: 1" - is there no way to get around that?

It would be nice to show the right amount when passed across..

qualiteam 01-26-2011 12:49 AM

Re: PayPal is launching an advanced payment interface.

Its just a quick solution, thus I'm afraid no.

PayPal expects individual prices for items, but allows only 2 digits after the decimal point. Thus having quantity passed implies devision of the price by product quantity to pass to PayPal. But due to that limit the total could became wrong e.g. for 2 products $15.77/2 = 7.885 but only 7.88 can be passed as a price for the item...

ambal 01-26-2011 06:14 AM

Re: PayPal is launching an advanced payment interface.

the thing is that we were led somehow to do the change for EC first of all and missed the WPS change. (sorry I do not remember all the circumstances, it was several months ago).

Anyway, Alex posted a couple of patches for WPS here and the WPS change is to be included in 4.4.3.

Hi Alex , I tried the 4.3.2 version but no descriptions are coming accross or showing. Did you have a fix for this?

Thanks

For 4.4.3, please make it an option that we can Enable or Disable, and preferably, have it default to Disabled upon install/upgrade.

I appreciate the effort that xcart may exert to write this mod, and realize that paypal may require certain restrictions that xcart cannot overcome - but - I really can't use this if it may only lead to more confusion for the customer. Inaccurate line-items are worse than a "catch-all invoice item", to me anyway.

Thanks. and I do hope this is all on-topic. 8)

The way around this would be to put the items in the cart at their normal price, then use the "discount_amount_x" field to bring it down to the correct price.

(As I'm assuming this problem would only occur when you had done a buy 1 get one for X offer - otherwise there would be no rounding issue)

How is one item priced 7.885 in the first place? Prices in XC are rounded to the second digit after the decimal point. Even if the user tries to import price $7.885 it will be saved in the db as $7.89 or $7.88 - the price field in xcart_pricing table is decimal(12,2) type which will force the price to 2 digits after decimal point. So how someone will order quantity of 2 and have subtotal for this quantity $15.77? This makes no sense. Or is my brain fried today?

Sunray Sales 02-18-2011 11:47 AM

Re: PayPal is launching an advanced payment interface.

I asked a similar question in the Completed Mod section. I don't understand why you need to divide the price by 2, if your quantity is 2.

My brain also must be fried.

monokuro 02-18-2011 08:52 PM

Re: PayPal is launching an advanced payment interface.

Incase there is an offer of some sort - ie "Buy 2 for $9.99".

But this is why I suggested the "offer" could be put into the cart as a discount (which the advanced interface accepts)

Quantity issue resolved.

Hey guys!

I know this seems to be a dead thread, but I was wondering if there would be a way to "disable" the line item passing to PayPal?

I would like it to just show the totals, or a "generic name" for the item names.

In short, can I make it like the old paypal connection and have ONLY the total show when they pay with paypal?

Thomastoes, perhaps we can help each other. I want line items to show, but I can only get it to show 1 generic name with a total...

Could you tell me what you have setup?

I have website payment standards selected. In the settings area, I have every field filled out and I am using the "api certificate". I do not have the "api signature" box filled out.

I also have the "Address override" box checked.

Thanks
