random reviews on home page

Has anyone come up with or sells a mod that shows random product reviews on the home page??

an example of what I mean can be seen at (not x-cart) http://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk/shop/

right hand side near the bottom, it shows you first few lines of the review with a thumbnail image along with it's star rating.

thats exactly what i wanted so i'll be in touch about it, one thing i did notice is that because the link you gave went to the html catalog of your site it doesnt make the review random, it was only when i went to the .php part of your site that it kicked in.

I was affraid of that but if you go browse around in the HTML catalog you will notice that YES it does changes in the HTML pages too. NOt as often as the dynamemic part but it does.

Just keep in mind that the HTML is gear to the Search engines and the minute a custumer log-in it will move them to the dynamic part of the store.

I hope this will help you.

Kind regards,
Ricky.

Perfect, I do have one question, on your customer testimonials if you click on it , it show you all the reviews available for your products, is that part of the same mod or is that a seperate one?

Oh and another question was it easy to install the mod yourself or did the developer do it for you?

The customer testimonial is not part of it.

and is very easy to install.

Kind regards,
Ricky

cotc2001 09-18-2004 09:13 AM

Well its been bought and i've just installed it fine, i've had to send an email to the developer asking about the optional thumbnail size and the option to not show low rated votes as there is no instructions on that in the word doc that comes with the zip file.

So was the full page customer reviews another mod then? or was that one of your own changes (if mod can you point me to somewhere i cna purchase it)

Got a reply from the developer last night about the above

Quote:

Thank you for your business!

I appreciate you notifying me of the missing information and I will be
sending an updated document in just a few moments.

If you have any other questions or problems, let me know!

Not sure if he means he will email it out to purchasers or if he is updating the zip file for us to download though , hasnt done it yet though but I don't know if it was nighttime in his location

cotc2001 09-19-2004 01:52 PM

You don't happen to have the info do you?

Plase tell me what info are you talking about?

cotc2001 09-19-2004 02:41 PM

instructions on

Quote:

the optional thumbnail size and the option to not show low rated votes as there is no instructions on that in the word doc that comes with the zip file.

it is advertised as you can change that but there are no instructions in the zip that refer to it.

cotc2001 09-20-2004 04:29 AM

Ooops just realised that the sight of a mans bottom might offend - sorry but I will be selling mens underwear.

Just noticed something that I might get the developer to change, i think my idea makes more sense than it's native way.

currently it displays every review as an individual so if you have two reviews of the same item it displays two thumbnails and two reviews.

I think it would be more visually friendly if it showed one thumbnail and each review for that product to the left of it.

so rather than it being like this

http://www.cotc.co.uk/original.jpg

It should be like this

http://www.cotc.co.uk/edit.jpg

Dunno what do you think? can you see a disadvantage for doing it this way, I just think it will cut down on the amount of pages of reviews and make it neater for the customer.

rjcbear 09-20-2004 09:13 AM

I asked Alex to develop that that way the reason been it was easy to program and the othere thing is it's using the customers name for every review.
Now If that can be accomplish it will be better now that you mention.

Let me know if they can do it.

Ryano 01-06-2005 01:08 PM

How is this mod working out for you guys? Looks great. But what happens if there is a bad review or if there is more than one review for a product. Does it still show both and two thumbnails, or is there a way to have it only show one of the reviews with one thumbnail? I am very interested! Thanks guys!

cotc2001 01-06-2005 02:08 PM

its seems to work well.

if there is more than one review for a product then it duplicates the thumbnail and shows it as a seperate view (hence my post above that it would be better collate all reviews for one product into one area on the same page).

I do get a lot of people looking at the page so I would say it does what it says on the tin.

If there is a bad review then I tend to leave it in, as long as there is no foul language because we want to have honest reviews, it's no good if all your reviews are glowing because it doesnt represent a true view.

A better soloution would be that it would email the site admin when someone places a review for the product and it places it in a holding queue but that is more something that should be built into x-cart by default rather than as somebodys 3rd party mod.

rjcbear 01-06-2005 02:39 PM

I second the idea of sending and email to the admin. I love that mode is great and there is alot of sales from those items in my site.

Kind regards,
Ricky

Ryano 01-06-2005 03:03 PM

So if there is more than one review...does it show both thumbnails in the menu area? Sorry, still a little confused about that part. Only concerned because I have a few products with 3 or 4 reviews attached. Would it show all 3 or 4 thumbnails in the menu bar? That would take up a lot of space if so. Thanks for the quick replies guys. And both of your sites work great!

cotc2001 01-06-2005 03:44 PM

No it only shows one item in the menu bar at a time, but they rotate randomly so you might show review A for an item and on another page it might show review C and then go back to A again then B etc. etc.

Ryano 01-06-2005 04:39 PM

That is how it should work! Cool, I will be getting it! Thanks again guys!

No problem at all.

On my signature is the link to his site so you can get it if you like.

Kind regards,
Ricky

Ryano 01-06-2005 07:51 PM

Thanks Ricky...I went to his site, bought the mod, and have installed it. It looks great!

One thing I would like to change is the font color. It is in blue right now, and I have a grey menu background. Do you guys know how I could change the font to a different color such as white?

In the description for the mod it says:

Quote:

Optionally configure the thumbnail size.
Optionally configure the rating threshold so that no low-rated product reviews are selected.

How do I go about adjusting these?

Thanks for all your help guys!!!

rjcbear 01-06-2005 08:06 PM

When I asked him to develop this mode he did not have the options below unless is done internally.

Quote:

Optionally configure the thumbnail size.
Optionally configure the rating threshold so that no low-rated product reviews are selected.

I will contact Al and ask him about it and I will post his answer.

Kind regards
Ricky

Ryano 01-07-2005 12:01 AM

Thanks Ricky!

I contacted him as well just to ask a couple of questions.
Mind me asking how you got it to go to the product when you click on the
pic? Mine only works when you click on the review, whereas I feel like you should be able to click both.

Ryano,

The first version of the mod worked that way just the review. He fixed it so you may want to contact him and asked to fix it for you. or give you the latest vrsion of it.

Ricky

Hi Ricky,
I tried emailing Al twice since my purchase on Thursday, and still haven't gotten any reply. Have you heard any word from him? Thanks

I have also emailed Al and have not heard from him.

I wanted to purchase this mod, but went to the site, secure sll was expired ANd the only payment method was PayPal.

I no longer use PayPal and will not again, so I wanted to see if there was another way I could get this without using PayPal. (long story short, I lost over $3K with them.

Anyway, I still want the mod and no word, anyone have any ideas of how I can get this?

Anyone else have one like this?

Thanks

cotc2001 01-08-2005 02:10 PM

I had the same problem with communication with him, never got a reply, its a good mod so it's worth it to keep trying to contact him

Maybe, maybe not...

There are other prople in this forum that can do this also. AND they usually will email you back.

I hav emailed him in the past, over three weeks ago. Never heard from him. So I am thinking if it is this type of service up front, is it worse on the back end after the sale?

I still want the mod, so if anyone else out there reads this that could do it for me kust give me a shout out.

I have tried to go to someone that currently offers it, but it would seem as though they do not want to really sell it.

Thanks

cotc2001 01-08-2005 02:59 PM

Well if you find someone let me know, i could really do with grouping the reviews as per my screenshots

Ryano 01-08-2005 11:15 PM

Personally if I knew that I would not getting even a simple reply after purchasing this mod and not even getting all of what this mod describes in the product details, I would not have purchased it. Hopefully there is a solution for all of this and I will hear back from him by Monday or so. I would at least like to get this mod working where the customer can click on the picture and be able to go to the product. Doesn't make much sense not being able to click the picture as well as the description. If you guys might happen to know the coding for being able to click on the picture could you please post it for me or pm it to me? Precciate it!

rjcbear 01-09-2005 01:25 PM

Guy,

I am sorry this is happening and feel terrible since is me the one that recommended the mod. I will see what I can do he sometimes pop-up on Yahoo messenger and I will ask him about it.

I hope I can get some where with Al and get this resolve.

Kind regards,
Ricky

If you would like to make a sale for him, sell me the mod and then when you hear from him, just pop him a paypal for me

I would like to have the mod, I just can't get him to return emails to let me know how I can purchase without the PayPal paymernt.

Has to be another way

Ryano 01-09-2005 02:02 PM

Hi Ricky!
Oh, I am by no means blaming you at all. It is not your fault how another company's customer service performs. I'm sure you didn't know his service was like this for other customers. I like the way the mod works, and will be very happy with it once I get it working right. I got your pm. Thanks a lot for the help. I will be replying to you shortly. :)

Online Michael 08-09-2006 07:36 AM

Sorry to bring such an old post back to life, but I too would like to purchase this mod but there is no way of getting in touch with the developer. Is he still around?

cotc2001 08-09-2006 07:42 AM

I don't think he is around anymore so your best bet would either to be approach x-cart team themselves or one of the many 3rd party devleopers who are on here to recreate it for you.

rjcbear 08-09-2006 10:54 AM

Hello every one,

The guy that created the mod for me is no longer in business, but for all you guys that like the mod I have great news I asked Carrie from www.bcsengineering.com to make some mifications and she has it on her site.

The review mod can be found in the following url.

http://bcsengineering.com/store/catalog/Customer_Review_BUNDLE__Xcart_Mod-p-102.html

If you have any other questions about this mod I will be more than glad to help.

Kind regards,

Ricky
