5.2.Beta: Webmaster mode, Multicurrency, WYSIWYG for email notifications and more

Greetings, X-Cart users, merchants and developers! Today X-Cart 5.2 Beta is becoming available for public. We do not recommend building a production store using this beta package. It's for testing purposes only. The release of a stable package of version 5.2 is scheduled for March.

Please take a look at this overview of what it brings:
http://blog.x-cart.com/5-2-beta.html

And after that download the package here:
http://www.x-cart.com/downloadxc5beta

Look forward to your feedback - right in this thread or via the big-tracker.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Update:

Availability of upgrades

There will be NO upgrades from 5.1.10 to 5.2 Beta - as long as it's in Beta.
There WILL BE upgrades from 5.1.x to 5.2.x, when a stable release of v.5.2 is available
There WILL BE upgrades within branch 5.2 Beta and from Beta to a stable version

Re: 5.2.Beta: Webmaster mode, Multicurrency, WYSIWYG for email notifications and more

Good to see XC5 is moving forward like this.
Will there be 5.1.x to 5.2.x upgrade or 5.2.x must start from scratch?
Looks like the 5.2.x has some major core changes. How will this play with existing stores base don 5.1.x?
The most exciting changes to me are the emails editor and cache rebuilt. Hopefully they both work as expected - I did not have a chance to test yet.

Re: 5.2.Beta: Webmaster mode, Multicurrency, WYSIWYG for email notifications and more

The images workflow I would like to see SEO friendly included. Not x-cart re-naming the filenames to image452.jpg

Multicurrency a nice addition, would have liked it to have been improved since just simply x-cart 4 version which was basic. It would be good practice to say okay we have the feature, but this is x-cart 5, we are going to bring it out but improved from version 4, however good its there either way. I think improvements are coming however. Auto-detect via geo-ip in future, not the customer has to go find a menu and they might think the store is based in USA, when its not, and they close the browser. Added benefit would be with geo-ip, you can usually narrow down to the town or city and therefore display a customised message that not only is the currency in their currency, but you can ship to this location. Perhaps even say shipping from $5 to this location for example in a graphic. It would appear that this is very possible. I have seen this in cart websites.

The en/us icon I still have an issue with. First you are showing the Union jack flag and the USA flag merged together for some reason. Because we have an alliance? It seems for a language it seems. Okay well that can be argued, but then you are displaying the USD currency next to where the Union Jack flag is. Surely an oversight. USA and UK language have many differences in spellings and interpretation. More important is that it is confusing to determine to a customer if you are based in the UK or the USA? Imagine you are on Amazon for example and you can see there could be some confusion there. I immediately changed this image to British because my shop is UK based. A lot of input for one image maybe, but it could have important ramifications to the end user. Are you going to then display Russian flag icon with another Russian speaking country like Ukraine? because you speak the same or similar language?

Other improvements I welcome, especially cache-rebuild. It would be good to add that the layout columns can be changed depending on Homepage, static page, storewide, etc. Maybe you want just a left column in category listings for example.

Dear Kensia,

Do you mind clarifying the below from the blog regarding HHVM please?

We measured the page load time for one of such projects with 50K items and millions of active users annually, m3.Large Amazon EC2 Instance was in use, take a look:

What was the maximum number of concurrent users you found during your testing before performance started to decrease?

Thanks :)

This should never be a question with v5, right? Just confirming the commitment to a simple upgrade system.

Hi guys!

I am so sorry for being silent for a week in this thread.

xtech & zychen, I just tested my local installation of X-Cart 5.2 Beta and its admin area works just fine to me. Could you please let me know what exactly does not work on your installation? Do you receive any kind of error message?

cflsystems & cherie, upgrades from 5.1 to 5.2 will work as usual. As Steve pointed out correctly, there is a massive change in terms of organizing sidebar menus that is why modules must be ready for it and uploaded to marketplace before official release of 5.2 stable. We already notified all X-Cart 5 developers about upcoming changes, so I believe, they will be ready. Aside from that, this release will be kind of the same as we did in May when there was an upgrade from 5.0 to 5.1

This workflow is being reworked right now, so it will be there.

This is a great suggestion. I will make a note of it for Geo-IP implementation.

Re: 5.2.Beta: Webmaster mode, Multicurrency, WYSIWYG for email notifications and more

I made an install from the distribution on a fresh server and then checked that version 5.1.10 was still working correctly.
However, X-Cart 5.2 gives a "Error code: ERR_CONNECTION_RESET" on both the storefront and the admin page.
The storefront loads but it continues trying to load on Google Chrome with the "Error code: ERR_CONNECTION_RESET" error on the console.
The admin page is never able to load, saying "This webpage is not available", "Error code: ERR_CONNECTION_RESET".

Hello zychen!

Could you please have a look at php_errors and xlite logs files in the <X-Cart>/var/log/ folder and let me know if there are any errors? It will help me identify why this problem happened.

Tony.

Both files have no errors in them. I have also tried rebuilding cache and nothing seems to help.
This is my second installation on a different server and it still doesn't work. Maybe you could try to download from "http://www.x-cart.com/downloadxc5beta" and install it again on a fresh server to see if you get the same problems.

We have discussed this moment with the team and we have come up to a solution:
  • We will change default language flag to US one (since US customer base is far bigger than UK one)
  • We will add Union Jack flag icon into the distributive, so you can rename it to en.png and X-Cart will start using it for English language in UK stores
  • Upgrade will not rewrite changed flag icons, so the approach above will keep working through upgrades
  • If a merchant wants to use two English languages: US and UK, they will be able to do so, because X-Cart allows a new language with custom language code.

Please, let me know if you see any problems with introduced approach.

Hi Alex,
Do you know if the security bug mentioned in http://forum.x-cart.com/showthread.php?t=71473 is fixed for 5.2.1 beta too? Or was that just a bug with 5.1.10?

Yes, it is fixed in 5.2.1 too.

Re: 5.2.Beta: Webmaster mode, Multicurrency, WYSIWYG for email notifications and more

Yes I am confused right now. Was 5.2.0 ever released? If it wasn't why do we have now 5.2.1 beta? If you go thought 2-3 more betas before the official release will the 5.2 XC branch start from 5.2.5 or similar?

qualiteam 03-03-2015 01:24 AM

Re: 5.2.Beta: Webmaster mode, Multicurrency, WYSIWYG for email notifications and more

It is how the X-Cart 5 upgrade/distribution system works: every new version must have a different version number.

That's why there will be a few beta releases having their own version numbers (5.2.0 beta, 5.2.1 beta, perhaps 5.2.2 beta, and so on), and the "final" X-Cart 5.2 release will start from a version number like 5.2.3 or sort of this.

Yes.

Am working on a new customer and even though I have had six 4.x sites am planning on letting this customer be my first x-cart 5.x install.

I need to start the design and am wondering if I start with the latest beta, create the custom design / layout and start adding the ~250 products now...will it be ready for prime time in about 3-4 weeks?

or am I better starting with 5.1.x?

thanks in advance for your opinions,

I am not sure if upgrades are being released for beta packages. But I am hesitant to recommend you start with 5.1.X because so much has changed with 5.2. I am interested in the answer as well. Will beta 5.2.1 installations be able to upgrade?

Hi Folks!

There's a special paragraph about the availability of upgrades in the 5.2 beta announcement:

There will be NO upgrades from 5.1.10 to 5.2 Beta - as long as it's in Beta.
There WILL BE upgrades from 5.1.x to 5.2.x, when a stable release of v.5.2 is available
There WILL BE upgrades within branch 5.2 Beta and from Beta to a stable version

Hi!

I would like to announce that 5.2.1 was the last beta version of X-Cart 5.2.

On March, 24 we will release 5.2.2 version and make it available for downloading for users who purchased an X-Cart 5 license.

Thank you for your time and help with testing X-Cart 5.2!
