Hi bibi!
Well you have it uploaded, as long as it is in a public facing directory it should be fine. Can you access the file from the web? http://yoursite.com/somewhere/thisfile.pdf ?

If so then you need to simply place the link manually. There is no capability to include it in the category menu. This could be custom coded, but it is not a stock option to include links in the category menu. Perhaps you can explain more what you are trying to do. :-)

You can place any link, any file, anywhere you want if you use xMenus mod.

I'm just a satisfied customer (owner). HTH

Hi Totaltec,

This is what i have so far, check this link,http://www.anewagephoenix.com/Catalogs/

What i thought would happen is the user would click on the link and the pdf would open and they would see the catalog as it downloads. Instead they go right to the download and save file.
and all that took me 4hrs](*,)
Regards
help please!

P.S. i am looking at your suggestions on templates now, but i am so far behind on updates to the xcart i don't know how it would work for me.

Re: how to upload and link pdf catalog

DO NOT place links to PDF on a web site, unless you want the customer to download a PDF file.

Browsers handle PDFs in different ways, and from OS to OS and from user to user depending on settings. SOME browsers will display PDFs inline, but some users and browsers will ONLY save to a pdf file.

SO don't do it.

PDFs are amazing for sharing content, but not for what you want.

You need to build out a true catalog. You have a superb platform to merchandise your products. Go for it.

This link requires login to admin. This is a common mistake when using the built-in wysiwyg editor

Don't use the built-in wysiwyg editor. It does more bad than good. Just enter the link to the pdf file manually

<a href="path/to/file/my-file.pdf" target="_blank">this is download</a>

Re: how to upload and link pdf catalog

bibi,
I think you have taken the link down, so I cannot check it right now. But basically that is what I meant by "public facing directory" it needs to be in a directory that the public can access. Upload it to yoursite.com/pdf/yourfile.pdf Create the directory pdf or name it anything you want. Don't put it in the admin directory.

Re: how to upload and link pdf catalog

In addition to the file not having correct path, I think bibi was expecting the pdf to display inline, within the browser window.

That happens with *some* browsers, but not all.
Some users turn pdf inline viewing OFF. I do.

I really hate websites that use PDF where they should have html pages.

But a "catalog" that is meant to be downloaded, should be a PDF. SO there should be no expectation of reading it in the browser, right? You could save the file as a .zip and force the download? Just my $0.02

Hi carpeperdiem,

Thanks for all your input i finnaly have my catalog up on my site.
http://www.anewagephoenix.com/images/Catalog2013.pdf

The reason i wanted to add a catalog is so the customer can see the products i do not have on the site, there is just to many to upload and change all the time.

Is there any kind of risk with this? i know you said dont do it but why, can you explain?
Thanks a bunch

Re: how to upload and link pdf catalog

Hi!

There is no risk, but since this is the online store, your customers will expect that they can order online everything you sell. Having something in the PDF catalog only may drop your sales as many customers won't even open it: they will just use the website search function that looks through "online" products only.
