You might consider the Berghoff Cafe. It's one of the oldest bar/restaurants in Chicago - for a genuine feel for what Chicago was like in its glory days. They have been brewing their own beer (two versions: lager and dark) since long before micro-breweries became the rage. They also make excellent root beer for non-drinkers. It is a large place: one side is a gigantic bar with floor to ceiling dark wood paneling and large photos taken during the prohibition era. The other side is a wonderful restaurant specializing in German fare. Located on 17 West Adams Street.

I live in Chicago - The Berghoff never disappoints out of town guests. No matter where you decide, I'll do what I can to join you.

Hi Jim,

That's a great suggestion! The Berghoff sounds really nice. And it's got lots of history I see.

Jim, have you been to a local sports bar called Mother Hubbard's at 5 W. Hubbard St. Chicago, IL 60654 at: http://www.motherhubbardschicago.com/
Is that a typical local sports bar in Chicago ? I don't know if it would be suitable for a meeting though.

David,
You can't go wrong with Mother Hubbard's as a sports bar, but if there is a big game going on, it could be on the loud side . . . I'm not sure if your goal is to stay as close to the downtown area (called "the Loop") or not. There are some great brew pub options a little bit North - probably the best one would be Goose Island Brewery (Goose Island is a Chicago landmark). They have two brew pubs on the North side:

Hi Jim,

Goose Island Brewery looks like a great place!

Of course, wherever QualiTeam chooses, I look forward to attending!

Maybe it would be recommended to get reservations, of course, since
most bars / pubs in Chicago are usually very busy.

For a Friday in June, reservations would be recommended. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

I am in Chicago and would like to be there if my schedule allows. I am still working with a developer on my site and would like to get some updates. If you want a central location downtown, more in the business area, then the Berhgoff is a good option. You will likely get an afterwork more formal business crowd there. Goose island is another good recommendation - a very good local micro/macro brewery.

Can you tell me what time you think you might be starting this event?

Thanks

Vince

Hi Vince,

That's a good suggestion with the Goose island brewery.

As in the first post in this thread, from Alex at QualiTeam, you can subscribe to the list with the info for the event at: http://eepurl.com/mePQP

You will then receive an email with the define date and time when QualiTeam decides on the location.

I'm about 8 hours from Chicago, but I'm thinking about driving/flying in so I can at least put some faces to names. Having worked with the X-Cart Team for more than 10 years, I think it's about time we meet ;)

I'll not be doing the Conference, but I'm up for a beer or two!

That was my idea as well although I will have to fly - driving 2000 miles is not what I would wanna do :)

Re: X-Cart Beer Meeting in Chicago, June 8th

Yeah, 2k miles can be rough on the old body :)

I was thinking about flying, but 8 hours in the car with my music and cigars will give me enough alone time (thinking time), and right now I think I'll take that route than the flying in route.

Just looking at hotels now - looks like Holiday Inn in downtown is one of the better rates ($157/night).. Not really big on spending the $240/night for Hyatt, and really don't want to be 10 miles outside the city at the airport for $91. What you save on the room, you'll spend it on a taxi!

Hotels.com - 506 West Harrison Street, Chicago IL.

Mark (one of the other techs at Hands-on) lives about 4 hours outside of Chicago, so I'll likely swing in for friday, then meet up with him for Saturday.

Mark me down as a definite to be there - I'll even be sure to pack a few extra cigars for those interested. Reserved my spot with X-Cart, but no email yet - maybe it takes a while.

Yes I think you better count on that beer. All this was kinda last minute for me and I am most likely not going. $900 flight is not something I want to pay. And it was just $350 few days ago?!

Hi Steve,

Yes, I totally understand!

Airlines these days change prices so often and charge really high prices. I am flying Air Canada, and they quoted me $1200+ dollars to just change my flight (not to book a new flight, just to change it) from Wednesday June 6th to Monday June 4th. Can you believe it, $1200 just to change a flight? Of course I am not paying $1200+ dollars to change a flight!

That's why they say that it's always recommended to book a flight months in advance to save, but, realistically, in business, it's hard to plan for last minute travel sometimes.

Airlines need to get with the times and realize that business moves so fast and they need to adapt to the needs of their customers.

I heard in the U.S. that JetBlue is a good airline. Here in Canada, Air Canada has a monopoly so they can charge what they want, who's gonna compete against them when they are so powerful.

Can usually get good discounts on flights via Expedia, I once saved at least ё100 off an Air Canada flight...

I looked at both venues and for hotels around them. If you're looking at walking distance, I couldn't find much. I did find a B&B but I passed on that.

I ended up booking at the Holiday Inn - 506 West Harrison Street, Chicago IL. I figure it's only 2 miles to either place and I can cab that without any concerns. The other factor I looked at, since I was going to be driving into town, was the parking situation. This place charges $35/night for parking. Some of the others I found charged the same rate but you were parked in a public lot up to 2 blocks away. Not fun.

So if you're hunting, that's where I'll be at. I couldn't bring myself to spending $220-250 for one night.
